CHAPTER 12

DeeDee suddenly realized she’d been pacing around the house for the past hour or so. Ever since Jake had left that morning, she’d been thinking about what had happened to that poor man who’d been murdered. She hadn’t really seen him when he was in his car in the parking lot, and she’d done that deliberately, but that hadn’t kept her mind from fixating on the situation.

Someone had killed a man right outside her restaurant on opening night. Everyone had been inside, enjoying her food, while he was alone and most likely suffocating in his car. Those were the facts, and they were hard to deal with. Her heart went out to him. What a sad way to go for someone young, or for that matter, anyone.

Wandering into the kitchen, she pulled open the fridge, even though she wasn’t the least bit hungry. The apple, sandwich, and chips that she’d had for lunch had made sure of that. But even so, she found her nervousness manifesting itself as hunger, or the need to at least chew on something. She tugged open the cabinet and saw the bowl where they kept mints and gum.

DeeDee found a piece of gum and unwrapped it, then stuck it in her mouth. When she closed the cabinet, she turned around and saw Yukon and Balto staring intently at her. It was only then that she realized it was the same cabinet where she kept their treats.

“Let me guess, you guys want something, too,” she said as she looked down at them. Yukon had already been laying down nearby, but Balto backed up into a sitting position. She smiled. “Oh, okay. But just because you two are being so good.”

Opening the cabinet again, she pulled out two dog treats and gave them to the dogs. “Here you go.”

Stepping around them, she walked over to the front window of the house and stared out. If she was really being honest with herself, she had to admit she was frustrated that something like the murder of the young man had happened at Deelish. Why couldn’t people commit murder somewhere else? Somewhere far away from where she was cooking would be great. Not that she wanted anyone murdered at all, of course. But if they were going to do it, she wanted it to be far, far away from her.

Her phone dinged with a text message, so she reached for it to see who it was. Cassie.

How are you doing, lady? Cassie had sent the message with a waving emoji.

Okay, I guess, DeeDee replied. Almost as soon as she hit send and she saw that her answer had been read, her phone rang.

“What do you mean, ‘you guess’?” Cassie asked when DeeDee answered the call.

“I don’t know,” DeeDee sighed. “I just can’t stop thinking about what happened last night.”

“Me, too,” Cassie admitted. “I keep thinking about him in that car while everyone else was leaving. I know it was dark, and it’s not like people make a habit of looking in other people’s cars.
